For its July exhibit, Hillsboro’s Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center is trotting out its pride and joy: artwork by students and instructors from the organization’s Art Center students.
The exhibit, on display through July 28, is a testament to the evolution of the art program, which was established at the Walters Center more than three years ago.
“We’ve got a pretty good identity and we’re always striving for a connection,” said Carl Annala, the organization’s cultural arts program supervisor.
The display features the work of students ranging from elementary age to senior citizens, as well as a sampling of works by various instructors – among them Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus professor and sculptor Vicki Lynn Wilson.
Annala said the program offers community-based artworks in various disciplines to advanced artists as well as those just getting their brushes wet.
“Art is a tricky thing to learn and teach because there are rules, but there are no rules,” said Annala. “I get excited about kids’ art because they don’t know anything about boundaries yet."
The Walters Cultural Center student and instructor exhibit is on display through July 28 at the arts center, located at 527 E. Main St. in Hillsboro.
