Some of the Northwest’s most talented teenage cyclists will be training in Forest Grove’s backyard next month as USA Cycling’s Athlete Development Camp comes to town.
The camp will be held for the second year in a row at Pacific University Aug. 1-6. Although there are camps available to other riders in the country, this is only the second time a camp’s been offered in the Northwest – and it’s Oregon’s second time as well.
But this isn’t just a weekend bicycle trip. The camp is aimed at talented teen riders who might, if they’re lucky, be future Olympians.
“A camp like this gives them a multi-faceted look [at cycling],” said Coach Oliver “Butch” Martin.
The weeklong overnight camp is held for campers ages 14-22. The camp offers a daily schedule of various activities for the riders.
Campers wake up for a morning ride, take nutrition, bike handling and racing classes, and also participate in a few time trials.
“There are a lot of riders coming from California, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada – the whole west coast,” said camp director Jim Anderson.
