While petitioners are poised to start collecting signatures to send a new two-cent-per-gallon gas tax to Cornelius voters, it might not make it to the ballot in November.
The filing deadline to get on the November ballot is Oct. 5, but it’s unlikely opponents of the gas tax could collect signatures and jump through the various hoops in time to make that deadline.
The city’s own effort to enact the tax hit the same snags.
“We’re just reading right out chapter-and-verse of the good election book,” said Cornelius city manager Dave Waffle.
