Forest Grove firefighters are still checking on a massive wildfire on the peak of David Hill that broke out July 14 near Forest Grove.
Crews are no longer stationed at the site, but are heading up to the burn daily to make sure it doesn’t reignite.
“We are going up to check on it,” said Matt Johnston, Forest Grove Fire & Rescue spokesman. “Just to make sure nothing’s flared up.”
The blaze is the worst in recent Forest Grove memory, igniting nearly 15 acres of slash timber debris on Stimson Lumber Company land.
Dry conditions and high winds made the blaze, which broke out last Wednesday afternoon, difficult to predict, according to Forest Grove Fire & Rescue Lt. Tad Buckingham.
“We still have crews out there today, [and] it’s still going.” Buckingham said last Thursday. “We plan on having a night crew as well.”
The cause of the fire is unknown, but the flames fed on slash from what appeared to firefighters to be a recent timber cut.
