Before rolling the dice on a pair of gambling-related ballot measures in November, Oregon voters must look at potential consequences of opening the door to a Las Vegas-style casino in the east Portland suburb of Wood Village.
This may not look like our issue — but look a bit deeper. Washington County and its local school districts, cities and efforts to improve parks and the environment have a huge stake involved.
We are extremely skeptical that Oregon has anything to gain from approving a privately run casino that would have more gaming devices than any Nevada casino and operate on the edge of a major U.S. city.
The key question is whether the casino actually will produce any new gambling revenue for the state or simply siphon off Oregon State Lottery dollars that are directed by the state’s Constitution to schools, jobs and parks.
Voters here need to know specifically what impact the casino would have on money directed by the Oregon Lottery to Washington County, which came to $101 million over the past two years.
